Abstract

We study theoretically the surface acoustic phonons propagating on semi-infinite, periodic AlAs/GaAs superlattices. The surface is either parallel (case A) or perpendicular (case B) to the layer interfaces. For the case A we find surface localized phonons below bulk band as well as inside bulk frequency gaps. For the case B the surface phonon branches exist only below the bulk band. The frequency gap and the folding effect of surface phonons are predicted at the boundary of mini-Brillouin zone. In both cases pseudosurface (PS) phonons are found inside the bulk band. Focusing characteristics of ballistically propagating surface and PS phonons are also studied.
