Abstract

The output of Surface Movement Radar (SMR) is a high resolution real aperture image, which is difficult for traditional radar target detection method to deal with. This paper focuses on the target detection algorithm for SMR. Firstly, the problem in SMR target detection is analyzed. Then a new SMR target detection algorithm based on the characteristic analysis of SMR echo is proposed, which has an idea originated from digital image processing. The flow chart of the algorithm and the realization of the main components are described in detail separately. The processing result of SMR return signal collected from certain airport is presented to reveal the validity of the proposed algorithm. The target is detected rightly. A mass of isolated false alarm points are removed and the cavities inside the target region are filled by target cluster aggregating processing. The proposed algorithm is important for real SMR system research and development.
