Abstract

Carburization of steels is a widely used industrial technique; however, a long processing time is generally required for this process. Herein, laser irradiation in low-alloy steel in a propane gas atmosphere was conducted using equipment that comprises a plastic chamber. This method is a novel laser carburization technique conducted in the liquid-phase-free temperature range. By controlling the laser irradiation conditions, the material could be carburized at a temperature of ~1500 K, which is difficult to achieve using conventional carburizing equipment. This method substantially reduced the processing time, i.e., promoted high-speed carburization.
