Abstract

Surface modes in a hollow optical fiber are discussed. The fiber is made of right-handed material core and left-handed material cladding. Through using Maxwell's equations, some dispersion equations for TE, TM, EH and HE surface modes are obtained. According to these characteristic equations, as the absolute value of the refraction index in the cladding is larger than that in the core, some dispersion curves for different surface modes are plotted, respectively. Then, these curves are analyzed and some new characteristics of surface modes in the LHM hollow fiber are discovered.
