Abstract
Some solid reagents traditionally supported on silica gel or alumina are also effective as heterogeneous reactants in the absence of a support. Moist magnesium monoperoxyphthalate (MMPP), either suspended in CH2Cl2 or solventless, is a convenient alternative to peroxycarboxylic acids for oxidation of sulfides and epoxidation of alkenes. The latter reaction exhibits an unusual order of reactivity: trisubstituted > disubstituted > tetrasubstituted. Unsupported moist Ca(OCl)2 and OXONE are also effective oxidants.
