Abstract

In present paper the satellite remote sensing data (obtained by Envisat ASAR, Terra and Aqua MODIS, and NOAA AVHRR instruments) is used to study coastal dynamics of the north-eastern Black Sea. Surface manifestations of internal wave (IW) packets were registered in ASAR images of the sea surface. Possible factors leading to the generation of non-tidal IWs are determined on the basis of joint analysis of available satellite remote sensing data of the sea surface in microwave, visual and IR ranges complemented by contact measurements. A mechanism of IW generation is suggested. The coherence between occurrence of IW surface manifestations and location of the density pycnocline layer is established.
