Abstract

A surface ionization type ion source, which produces a Ba+ ion beam of known chemical purity and excitation state, has been developed specifically for use in collision experiments. Barium vapor is surface ionized on a rhenium filament that is heated to approximately 1800°C by the passage of a direct current. The water cooled source provides ion currents of about 10 μA, and can be operated without differential pumping in a vacuum environment of (3–4)×10−9 Torr.
