Abstract

Erosion ripple formation on aluminum samples during solid particle impacts was studied. Sharp polyhedral A12O3 solid particles were used as abrasives. Geometric surface instabilities in various forms were introduced to the surface of the A1 samples. Optical microscopy was used to examine the influence of the geometric instabilities on the ripple formation and development. Investigations of the surface morphology of eroded samples have shown a gradual elimination of the geometric instabilities by the erosion ripple formation. However, the ripple size strongly depends on the surface conditions prior to solid particle impact. Based on the evidence, a mechanism for ripple formation is proposed.
