Abstract

Examination of the systematic variation of surface finish on the fracture strength-grain size relationship in polycrystaliine MgO reveals a family of Hall-Petch lines. A model combining the stress concentration effects of surface machining flaws and a Stroh-type crack nucleation mechanism is presented to describe these results.
