Abstract

A new method is proposed for detecting enhanced Raman signals from molecules adsorbed on a flat crystal surface by using attenuated total reflection arrangement. Raman signals on the prism side are shown to be enhanced by a factor of 10 4 as compared with those from free molecules, due to the excitation of surface polaritons. It is noted that no roughness of a crystal surface is required in our method. Observation of the enhanced Raman signals under our proposed configuration will reveal definitely the role of surface plasmon (or exciton) polaritons in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering.
