Abstract

The relationship between the surface effects and the boundary conditions of a semi-infinite array of identical potentials has been studied. It is found that the appearance of the surface states hinges on the appropriate consideration of the possible effects on atoms near the surface due to the presence of the surface. Criteria for the existence of the surface states for two specific models of the surface are obtained.
