Abstract

Surface charge of activated carbon in aqueous system and its influence on adsorption property was reviewed fromthe viewpoints of electrokinetic potential (ζ potential). Surface charge varies extensively depending on the precursorfor carbon, activation condition and post-treatment. The adsorption of various adsorbates, e. g., dyes and natural organic materials was affected by ζ potential in addition to pysical properties such as pore size and specific surface area of activatedcarbon. These suggest that surface charge plays an important role in activated carbon as an adsorbent in water.
