Abstract

A series of five nickel-cerium intermetallics (NiCe 3 , Ni 3 Ce 7 , NiCe, Ni 2 Ce and Ni 5 Ce) has been prepared by melting the component metals in an induction furnace. Surface and bulk characterization of the untreated, oxidized and reduced alloys has been carried out by the combined use of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, ESCA), and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface properties of the Ni x Ce y system in its active form will be correlated with the CO hydrogenation activity.
