Abstract

A series of cutting trails have been carried out utilising milling operations and the development of chatter on the machmed surface has been analysed. 3D surface metrology techmques have been used to characterise the surface and particular attention has been paid to the use of Areal Auto Correlation Function (AACF) and Areal Power Spectral Densities (APSD). Both the AACF and APSD have been shown to effectively characterise the development and appearance of chatter and the implications of the use of these techniques for potentially controlling the machining process have been outlined.
