Abstract

Summary form only given. Ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules are confined in a very thin cell (1.54/spl mu/m/spl tilde/-2.0/spl mu/m) and aligned by rubbed linear chain liquid crystal polymer (LCP) layers. The electro-optical characteristics of the ferroelectric liquid crystal film are studied. We have obtained good surface stabilized modes and high contrast ratio. These results are coincident with surface chain orientation model proposed by J.S.Patel and J.W.Goodby, in which smectic liquid crystals are better aligned by thermoplastic linear polymer.
