Abstract

Providence by Alain Resnais (1977) offers a reflection on human imagination and the creation of art. Within the structure, narration and symbolism of the film, the motive of alcohol plays a decisive role, as all the characters are drinking wine during the whole story. The continuous flow of alcohol is an image of the flux of thoughts of an old writer, who uses his drunkenness like his art for meditating on his life at another level of reality, where he can lose and find himself at the same time.
