Abstract
'Atlantic history is currently fashionable among North American historians. Its advocates urge a fresh reading of Western experience in the modern period centring on the interrelations between the peoples of the three continents bordering the Atlantic. This article traces the emergence of this paradigm in post-war European historiography and shows the changes it has undergone during the past two decades in the North American world. It finally questions the validity of this interpretative model outside the Anglo-American context.
