Abstract

Abstract A general explanation of the phenomena of hexagonal formations, which can be applied not only to the interpretation of polygonal soils, but also to basalt columns, orogenesis, or any geometric geologic problem. The degree of perfection of form is governed by the relation of velocity of fissuration to velocity of propagation of tensions; when the former is lower than the latter, regular hexagons result. An extensive bibliography is appended.
