Abstract

Abstract Several Quaternary levels, in different states of preservation, are found in the Clain valley, France. The lower terrace gravels contain reindeer and Equus (Asinus) hydruntinus remains; these are overlain by a clay containing Mousterian artifacts, contemporaneous with Pleistocene loess. The 25-meter terrace of Saint-Georges-les-Baillargeaux corresponds to an abandoned channel; it contains remains of Elephas trogontherii and is overlain in places by a true loess. Solifluction has been important and occurred during several different phases.
