Abstract

Thin electrolytically deposited Co-Pt films with a wide range of composition (15% Co–100% Co) were prepared. On the basis of their magnetic properties they may be grouped into stoichiometrically proportioned films and films with various other compositions. The magnetic behaviour of the stoichiometric thin films was studied by using a torsion magnetometer and by an a.c. method in magnetic fields of up to 330 kA m −1. These films display the order-disorder phenomenon and they may be obtained in a partially ordered state by the procedure described here. The presence of cobalt leads to an increase in the saturation magnetic induction. The magnetic characteristics of the films depend on their thickness because it has a bearing on the sizes and distributions of the ordered phase regions within the film.
