Abstract

The cohesive energy and the surface tension of transition metals are calculated as a function of the filling of the d band using the isotropic tight binding approximation in a simple cubic crystal. For this purpose we use an expansion in the moments of the density of the d band. We obtain, in particular, for a half filled band an exact and rapidly convergent expansion in function of the moments, which leads to reasonable numerical values.
