Abstract

About the Odyssean Formula ἐϛ πατρίδα γαῖαν : The Poetics of νόστος. This article examines a system which plays a significant role in the structure of the Odyssey : formulas in ἐν πατρίδι γαίῃ (or other datives, 10 times), πατρίδος αἴης (14 times) and πατρίδα γαῖαν (or other accusatives, object or destination, 62 times), with various transformational and compositional plays and devices of loops and chains, as meaningful on the thematic or narrative level as for the formal cohesion of the epos, always in tension. Along the three movements of Ulysses’ homecoming (songs I-V, VI-XII, XIII-XXIV ), a refined poetics of formular and ring-composition manifests itself in the description of the actions, interactions, and statements of characters, especially Athena, Telemachus, Penelope and of course Ulysses, and in the speech circuit which developps between them and with the general narrator. These typical formulas both concerns the Odyssey’s main theme and show and express its fundamental dynamics.
