Abstract

We demonstrate that 18-crown 6-ether interacts with tannic acid to form particles at pH 7.4 and degradable at pH 5. Tannic acid has been used in biomaterials on conjugation with various polymers. However, there remains concern about the degradability of such biomaterials. Although 18-crown 6-ether has a low molecular weight, the fact that it forms stable particles with tannic acid broadens the bioavailability of tannic acid. Furthermore, the pH-responsive properties under acidic conditions may favor drug release in lysosomes.
