Abstract

The compounds [Ag(H2O)2]2(1,5-Nds) (I), (Me4PyzH)2(1,5-Nds) (II), and [Zn(H2O)6] (1,5-Nds) (III) (where 1,5-Nds is 1,5-naphthalene disulfonate ion and Me4PyzH+ is the single-charged tetramethylpyrazinium ion) have been synthesized. Crystals of compound I are monoclinic, space group P21/n, a = 8.010(1) A, b = 9.161(1) A, c = 12.409(1) A, β = 105.36(1)°, V = 878.1(2) A3, ρcalcd = 2.171 g/cm3, Z = 2. Crystals of compound II are triclinic, space group P1, a = 9.059(1) A, b = 9.113(1) A, c = 9.145(1) A, α = 90.76(1)°, β = 94.21(1)°, γ = 114.15(1)°, V = 686.1(2) A3, ρcalcd = 1.357 g/cm3, Z = 1. Crystals of compound III are monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 13.231(6) A, b = 6.664(3) A, c = 9.685(4) A, β = 92.30(5)°, Z = 2. The structures of compounds I and II were established by X-ray diffraction; compound III has a known structure and was synthesized in order to measure its luminescence spectrum. The structure of compound I is built of [Ag(H2O)2]+ cations and 1,5-Nds2− anions, which are linked by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a 3D supramolecular assembly. In the structure of compound II, Me4PyzH+ cations and 1,5-naphthalene disulfonate anions are linked by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into 1D zigzag supramolecular chains. Compounds I–III are photoluminescent. The emission of compound III is nearly 100 times higher than for compound I or II.
