Abstract

Three types of dampers for the suppression of wind-induced vibration in flexible tower-like structures are introduced. Two dampers are so-called Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD), whereby one is a pendulum-type magnetic damper applied to a self-supprting type steel stack, and the other is a compact-cylinder-type using air resistance through a narrow space which of applied to the tower of a mono cable-stayed bridge for pedestrains only. The third type of dampersis a so-called Tuned Sloshing Damper (TSD), which uses the sloshing phenomenon of water bridge. In all cases, the results of damped free vibration testswhich and without the dampers demonstrated their effectiveness. In addition, in the case of the steel stack, the suppression effect was determined from aerodynamic response observation results.
