Abstract

Bicuculline, a potent and specific gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) antagonist, markedly reduced or completely eliminated cerebellar disfacilitation and presynaptic inhibition of the segmental potentials. Direct inhibition of the segmental potentials and reticular inhibition of the quadriceps potentials were unaffected by bicuculline. These studies support the suggestion that GABA may be the neurotransmitter involved in spinal presynaptic inhibition and Purkinje mediated cerebellar disfacilitation.
