Abstract
Peritectic Fe–Ni alloys were undercooled using glass fluxing. When subjected to an undercooling (ΔT) beyond a critical value (ΔT∗ ≈ 130 K), the peritectic reaction, L + δ → γ, normally occurring after primary recalescence, was found to be suppressed. This can be ascribed to a longer incubation time for the occurrence of the peritectic reaction than the time required for solidification of δ phase during post-recalescence, for ΔT > ΔT∗.
