Abstract

Multiple mode instabilities in erbium-doped fiber laser are undesirable due to the large amplitude noise in the laser. One scheme is proposed to suppress this kind of instabilities by inserting a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber in the ring cavity. The results show that the nonlinear effect not only eliminates the laser instability but also suppresses the noise in the laser. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
