Abstract

Stimulation of DBA 2J mouse spleen cells by the T-cell mitogen, concanavalin A (conA), and the B-cell mitogen, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was obtained in medium supplemented with isologous serum. The system was used to investigate the effects of serum from tumour-bearing animals on these mitogen responses. It was found that serum from mice with large tumours was markedly inhibitory to the response of normal spleen cells to both LPS and conA. The degree of inhibitory activity of the serum was directly related to the tumour-load of the serum donor. The results are considered in relation to the well known generalized immunosuppression which occurs in individuals with large tumours.
