Abstract
To control one of the most destructive sugarcane pests, Anomala albopilosa (Hope) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), mass trapping with light traps was conducted in the farmlands of the Miyako Islands from mid-April and early May to late July from 2008 to 2013. As a result of trapping, trap catches significantly decreased by 52, 89, and 28 % on the islands of Miyako, Irabu-Shimoji, and Tarama, respectively. The mean larval density in the sugarcane fields decreased by 91, 90, and 73 % on Miyako, Irabu-Shimoji, and Tarama, respectively, during this period; the difference was statistically significant for the first two cases. These results indicated that mass trapping with light traps effectively reduced these isolated populations of A. albopilosa. The effect of the light traps on A. albopilosa behavior is also discussed.
