Abstract

W. S. Chan* Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc. Fort Worth, Texas 0.0. Ochoa' Texas A&M University College Station, Texas The termination of a critical ply a small distance away from the free edge of laminates has been shown to be effective in suppressing delamination a t the edges. The laminates tested were (30,-302,30,90), and ( f 35,0,90), layups of AS413501-6 graphitelepoxy with a 90 ply termination near the free edges. The experimental resul ts clearly confirmed t h a t no delamination occurred under either static or fatigue loads and, as a consequence, both ultimate strength and fatigue life were increased. A quasithreedimensional finite element analysis showed that the effect of the ply termination was to reduce those inter laminar stresses a t the edges t h a t a r e the principal cause of delamination.
