Abstract

In reflection seismology, primary reflections in seismic records are often obscured by random and coherent noise, making the subsequent processing, imaging and interpretation difficult. We have developed a new filtering technique for suppressing coherent and random noise from seismic data by applying an adaptive thresholding method in the localized frequency-wavenumber (f-k) domain of prestack seismic gathers. The propose method is effective on handling highly complex geologic sections with conflicting dips and steeply dipping coherent noise. We demonstrate the performance of this adaptive filter with field data specially acquired for a seismic while drilling (SWD) test.
