Abstract
Suppression of a class of nonsense mutants (su-3) of the bacteriophage f2 results in an amino acid substitution at a unique site in the coat protein. Protein from wild-type phage contains a ehymotryptic peptide with the sequence Thr-Glu-(NH2)-Phe. The corresponding peptide from the suppressed mutant (su-3) has the sequence Thr-Ser-Phe. The bacterial suppressor strain, Su-1, of Weigert & Garen translates the nonsense codon as serine.
