Abstract
In three experiments the effects of a delayed punishment procedure mediated by playing audio tape segments was evaluated. In the first experiment, the effects of delayed punishment mediated by a tape recorder playback procedure were assessed using a multiple baseline design. Parents played a selected short segment of tape recorded tantrum behavior immediately followed by punishment several hours after the tantrum occurred. This procedure was successful in completely suppressing tantrum behavior in three public settings. In the second experiment playing the tape segment alone produced a small reduction in tantrum behavior in one child and no reduction in a second child while the tape recorder playback mediated punishment procedure was very effective with both children. In the final experiment, the tape recorder playback mediated punishment procedure was applied following a verbal mediated punishment condition and a mediated punisment condition which involved placing marks on the child's hand. The tape recorder mediated playback procedure produced larger reductions than the verbal and mark mediated procedures.
