Abstract

Mesenchymal Stromal Cell (MSC) Ferroptosis As reported in article number 2206439 by Ling Tao, Fuyang Zhang, and co-workers, MSCs are seriously damaged by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) after injection into the injured liver milieu and rapidly deplete due to ferroptosis driven by ROS-induced lipid peroxidation, like the devouring fire in the forest threatening the entered firefighters. Strategies reducing ferroptosis, such as incorporating ferroptosis inhibitors or overexpressing BCAT1, protect the implanted MSCs from ROS-irritated ferroptosis, hence improving MSC retention and therapeutic effectiveness, similar to the firefighters are shielded by the firefighting clothing and equipment.
