Abstract

The UN International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed annually on August 9th. According to the UN website (un.org) “the date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.” Promoting and protecting human rights is increasingly urgent. For example, the Supreme Court's attack on human rights in the US has led to the fall of Roe v Wade, and “the consequences of making abortion illegal will disproportionately affect people in already vulnerable groups, such as people from Black, Hispanic, immigrant, low-income, and non-English speaking communities.” This year, the Supreme Court is also hearing the case Brackeen v Haaland, which will allegedly review the Indian Children Welfare Act, established in 1978.
