Abstract

Selective mutism is a rare childhood emotional disorder. Affected children are unable to speak in certain settings (e.g. in school) but can speak fluently with intimates and in familiar settings (e.g. at home). This article looks at the presentation, possible causes and how school nurses might be able to support children with selective mutism.
