Abstract

This chapter explores the cultural aspects of Brazilians that might interfere with neuropsychological interventions. Brazil is a dynamic and diverse country analyzing its geographical, cultural, educational, and socio-economic characteristics. The author presents an insider's view of Brazilian values and traditions using an informal style and facilitates the understanding of how to establish successful rapport and working relationships with Brazilian clients and their families. A case study of a young man with traumatic brain injury due to a motor vehicle accident (MVA) is discussed with a special focus on the role Brazilian families usually have in the rehabilitation processes. It is argued that Brazilian family participation in treatment decision-making as well as psychoeducational, cognitive, emotional, and behavior interventions might promote successful rehabilitation. Professional aspects such as adequate tests selection and interdisciplinary team intervention plan is also discussed. The case presentation aimed to address crucial aspects of rehabilitation by introducing main issues that should be considered for a culturally sensitive neuropsychological assessment and intervention.
