Abstract

Nurses are being urged to come forward with information relating to abuse carried out at 13 hospitals and a hospice by former TV presenter Jimmy Savile. The RCN will work with the 14 organisations named in a report published last week by the Metropolitan Police and the NSPCC. A college spokesperson said nurses would be distressed to hear about the abuse, most of which dates back to the 1960s and 1970s. Regional offi cers will share information with the organisations involved, he said, adding that support is available for members. The report reveals 450 people have come forward alleging Savile abused them. Fifty sexual assaults took place in healthcare settings. Savile was already known to have a high level of access at some sites – notably Leeds General Infi rmary and Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire – but details have now emerged of suspected abuse at others (see box).
