Abstract

Early developmental experiences help shape children's self-concepts, senses of efficacy, motivations for learning, and beliefs about their roles and status in society. It is therefore important to create learning environments that promote children's total development-social, cognitive, physical, ethical, and emotional. This article asserts that developmentally oriented teacher support teams and home-school partnerships are critical to such environments. Theformerfocuses on supporting effective teaching and classroom management, preventing school and individual problems, and intervening early and intensively to avoid crises. The latter emphasizes linking the cultures, concerns, behavioral styles, and learning and communication modes of home and school.
