Abstract

A computerized, closed loop regulatory and supervisory set point control System has been implemented for the Crude and Vacuum units of a major oil refinery. A combination of digital control algorithms and supervisory programs are utilised to direct the action of two and three mode analog controllers which manipulate the process control valves. The objectives of the project with respect to economics, process description, some of the control configurations associated with regulation and supervision of tower operation, and supervisory programs for inferential calculation of tower loading and for crude switch automation are outlined. Project philosophy, personnel trainino, implementation procedures, system maintenance and hardware layout are summarized. Also oiven is a resume of significant problems and their solutions which occurred during and after Start up of the complete system.
