Abstract

Four compositions of elemental Ti-Al powder blends between 15 and 55 at.% Al were mechanically alloyed in a planetary ball mill. The alloying process was investigated by X-ray diffractometry. All compositions were transformed into nanocrystalline, super-saturated solid solutions of Al in hcp Ti. The lattice parameters of the super-saturated solid solutions follow a common linear composition dependence together with results for equilibrium phase hcp solid solutions of Al in Ti. By mechanical attrition the ordered intermetallic compound γ-TiAl was transformed into a super-saturated solid solution as well. During heat treatments the super-saturated solid solutions decompose into the phase(s) expected from the equilibrium phase diagram
