Abstract

Abstract The influence of substitutional disorder on the phase transition behaviour in mixed crystals of Rb1−x(ND4)xD2PO4 is investigated by means of NMR-NQR line shape analysis on the ferroelectric side of the phase diagram for the compositions x = 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.22. It is shown that the average local tetragonal symmetry of the paraelectric phase is broken already far above Tc by the local random field which couples linearly to the local polarization. The onset of ferroelectric long range order is monitored via the average asymmetry parameter of the electrical field gradient tensor at the 87Rb sites.
