Abstract
A VLBI array mapping of the compact radio source associated with BL Lacertae at 5.0 and 10.6 GHz has led to the identification of four superluminally moving components, each of which coincides with a flux and polarization outburst, as well as a nearly stationary knot which persisted during a prolonged period of quiescence. These observations are discussed in terms of relativistic beam models with propagating shocks; it is established that the observations are consistent with models with a Lorentz factor of about 4 and a viewing angle between the observer's line-of-sight and the jet axis of 19-31 deg. 54 refs.
