Abstract

In order to improve the uniform deformation ability of titanium matrix composites, the intragranular nano-TiB whiskers (TiBnw) reinforced Ti-6.5Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V (TA15) composite was designed and fabricated by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at the temperature of 1000°C. The TiBnw was successfully planted into the pre-alloyed powders before HIP. The composite sintered for 6h (HIP-6h) realized a complete densification process benefiting from a high sintering pressure of 150 MPa. While the 2h sintering process (HIP-2h) was insufficient to densify. The HIP-6h exhibits an unparalleled uniform elongation of 9.5%, which is superior to the survey TA15 matrix titanium composites. The excellent uniform deformation ability was demonstrated to be associated with the equiaxed structure and the blocking and multiplication effect on dislocations from the intragranular TiBnw.
