Abstract
Dr. Jampel's letter was referred to Dr. Cohen who offers the following reply: To the Editor: Dr. Jampel objects to our conclusion that the functional insertion of the superior oblique muscle changes in adduction and abduction, and therefore that the axis of rotation of the globe shifts during superior muscle contraction in these positions. It is of interest that he came to a similar conclusion in 1963: axis of rotation of the individual extraocular muscles appear to vary with the position of the ( Invest Ophthal 2 :265-271, 1963). The functional insertion of the superior oblique is the point where the superior oblique tendon exerts force to move the globe. Due to the posterior lateral insertion of the tendon, it is behind the equatorial plane (Listing's plane) along the vertical optic axis plane in most positions of adduction or abduction.
