Abstract

The practical applications of magnesium alloys are significantly limited owing to being susceptible to corrosion. In this study, superhydrophobic double layered MgAl-LDH/epoxy (DMALE) composite coatings were fabricated on magnesium alloys by the combination of hydrothermal synthesis and spraying methods, which consisted of a bottom layer of MgAl-LDH(WO42−)/epoxy coating and a top layer of superhydrophobic hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS)-modified MgAl-LDH(CO32−)/epoxy coating. The as-prepared DMALE coating delivered superior superhydrophobic and self-cleaning property. Such composite coating was demonstrated to possess good anticorrosion property, good chemical stability, and high abrasion resistance. This large-scale prepared composite coating is potentially useful for corrosion protection of magnesium alloys.
