Abstract

Two discrete superdeformed bands have been found in 146Gd. The superdeformed yrast band has an average quadrupole moment of 12±2 eb and shows a band crossing with an alignment of ≈ at a rotational frequency of 0.65 MeV. No crossing has been observed for the excited superdeformed band. Configuration assignments are discussed for 146–148Gd considering (i) the crossing behaviour of the superdeformed bands and (ii) the existence of degenerate and average superdeformed bands. Arguments are given that the [651 1 2 ] and [642 5 2 ] single-particle states are involved in the band crossing.
