Abstract

Metal-EuS-Al junctions and EuS/Al bilayers have been studied by superconductive tunneling. In the former, the tunnel current showed a spin-polarization up to 85%, which was attributed to the splitting of the EuS conduction band. The EuS/Al bilayers displayed a large extra Zeeman splitting in the quasiparticle density of states in Al due to the exchange interaction between the conduction electrons and the localized and spontaneousely ordered Eu 2+ moments. From the dependence of this internal (exchange) field on the Al film thickness, the exchange constant was found to be about 13 meV.
