Abstract

Surplus active power will be accumulated in the DC link of permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind turbine generator (WTG) system during the grid faults, thus resulting in DC link overvoltage and trip-off of WTGs. This paper reviews comprehensively the superconducting-type FRT strategy (SFRTT) based on superconducting magnetic energy storage system (SMES), superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) and unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) for PMSG based WTG, aiming at introducing the basic principle and characteristics of various SFRTTs. Moreover, combined use of SFCL and SMES (SFCL-MES), together with the cost-effective method that cooperates modified WTG control strategies and superconducting devices, are introduced for performing better FRT enhancement. The comparison study concludes that the cost-effective based SFRTTs show the best comprehensive performance. This paper will be beneficial to promote the application of superconducting technologies, and be useful to the study in the field of grid integration of wind power.
